Mary Astor was originally cast in the role of Helen Dallas, Stella's mother, as a loan out from Columbia Pictures.

Turned down the lead, saying the Stella character was "too unpleasant."

Frances Farmer was considered for the part of Laurel, but producer Sam Goldwyn was against it, after having fought with her in his previous production Come and Get It.
