Margaret Lockwood turned down the lead role apparently because of her previous experience of Hollywood. Before the Second World War, she had played second lead to Shirley Temple in Susanah of the Mounties.
Apparently both Lockwood and Phyllis Calvert so disliked their roles in this film that they both went directly to J Arthur Rank to plead their case. Calvert's pleas fell on deaf ears as she went on to make the film.
