As early as March 1951, Miss Grayson was set to star in the film with Gene Kelly. By the time Kelly came back from Europe (for his Invitation to the Dance), Miss Grayson's contract with MGM had lapsed. A real shame, since the score of the film would have needed her coloratura soprano.
When initially slated Kathryn Grayson's contract lapsed, the studio decided to cast dancer Moira Shearer, brilliant star of The Red Shoes, which Minnelli admired. Miss Shearer turned down the role.
