Jayne's agent tried to convince director Otto Preminger to use her as the Army wife who gets raped in the film, but Preminger went with Lee Remick, who was recast after Lana Turner dropped out, due to difficulties with the director.

The legendary actor turned down the role of the judge. In the end, the role was played by the real-life judge who participated in the Army-McCarthy hearings.

Shooting had aready began but she and director Otto Preminger couldn't get along and she walked. Lee Remick replaced her at the last minute.
